The Legacy at Cimarron Helps Daughter Navigate “New” Relationship With Mother In Memory Care

“Caring for someone with dementia is like saying a long goodbye,” Melissa S. described. “You say goodbye to the person you knew… and you adjust to the new relationship and the role you now play.”

Her mother, Reva H., lives at The Legacy at Cimarron, which offers evidence-based memory care designed to help older adults with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Prior to Reva’s new home, Melissa’s journey caring for her mother had been emotional and full of challenges. It was, at times, filled with moments of grace – but now, she’s found peace knowing Reva is properly cared for.

“In adjusting, you say hello to the little things that bring them joy,” Melissa added. “It’s such a blessing to know they are loved and cared for with the utmost respect, and there is nothing like the proof of that in their smile.”

The Legacy at Cimarron utilizes the Connections program, a relationship-oriented approach to dementia care. That’s what Melissa credits for helping her maintain a meaningful connection with her mother.

The program emphasizes three core aspects: Connect, Move, and Learn. It engages residents in activities that improve their physical and cognitive health. For Melissa, the program has been crucial in navigating her mother’s dementia, and finding new ways to interact with each other.

“At The Legacy at Cimarron, we are committed to providing the highest level of care and creating an environment where families can feel confident that their loved ones are in good hands,” Jacob Boggs, Executive Director, said. “Melissa’s story is a reflection of the compassion and respect we strive to provide every day.”

“I appreciate every job well done providing loving care for my mom,” Melissa added. “The kitchen staff, the cleaning crew, maintenance, the caretakers, the medical team, entertainment, and the management. I love it all! I see everyone working so hard!”
