Some might expect an older person to become jaded after a lifetime of experiences. But Tomi, a vibrant Japanese-American woman, is anything but.
With her 100th birthday approaching, Tomi’s journey has been shaped by the historical events she witnessed, the places she explored, and the enduring relationships she formed along the way.
“Tomi is such a valued part of our community,” shares Barbara Carrillo, the Life Enrichment Director of Tucson Place at Ventana Canyon. “Her journey inspires those around her, filled with wisdom, faith, and a heart full of cherished memories, including her childhood in Japan and the simple pleasures she holds dear.”
Tomi Values Strength and Unity
Tomi was born in March of 1925 and is a treasured Tucson Place at Ventana Canyon resident. She exemplifies resilience, love, and adventure, having grown up during a time of significant change and challenge.
Tomi spent much of her youth in a girls’ dormitory, living amidst the backdrop of the Chinese War and the events surrounding Pearl Harbor. Despite these challenging circumstances, she pursued an education up to the ninth grade and is fluent in English and Japanese.
Raised by her parents, Misao and Chutaro, Tomi grew up in a family that valued strength and unity. She shared a close bond with her four siblings, one of whom is still living today, and she holds the memories of her deceased siblings close to her heart. Her Buddhist faith also deeply influenced her upbringing, which has been a guiding force throughout her life.
Meeting Her Match
Tomi’s career path took her to the U.S. Air Force Engineering office, where she worked as a clerk. There, she met the love of her life, Bill.
Their love story began with a simple lunch date and quickly became a lifelong partnership. They were married at the American Embassy, starting a journey filled with shared adventures and deep love.
Some of her fondest memories include her mother-in-law’s homemade apple pies, a delicious reminder of the warmth and comfort of family.

Tomi’s Adventurous, Giving Spirit
Tomi’s love for adventure is well-known in our community. She traveled to many countries and immersed herself in diverse cultures and landscapes. Her passion for skiing and exercise kept her active, engaged, and healthy.
Tomi was also inspired to join various organizations, to which she generously contributed her time and talents. She particularly enjoyed making stuffed animals for underprivileged children. Her friendships have also been a source of great joy and support throughout her life. She maintains long-standing relationships with many of the people she has met on her life adventure.
Tomi is well-liked by Tucson Place at Ventana Canyon caregivers and residents and is often seen palling around with her close friends Patrick, Jedd, and two lovely ladies who are both named Diane.
