For nearly twenty years, Pete Y. skied with the Monroe County Ski Club, carving through trails with friends on countless excursions. The assisted living resident shared snapshots of those adventures during Evergreen Place’s “Share a Memory” program, where residents bring personal items and tell the stories behind them. The show and tell session is a great way for seniors to connect over life stories, with mementos and photos adding an illustrative component.
Pete shared photos from two trips with the club: one to Niagara Falls and another featuring a helicopter ride over remote ski locations on Canada’s West Coast. However, the most attention-grabbing photo was of a sign reading “Pete Yocum Hall,” a prank his friends pulled after a night out. “That’s not even how I spell my name,” Pete laughed, recalling the moment. Despite the mix-up, the memory of that trip and the bond with his friends remains one of his favorites.
The “Share a Memory” program has become a popular gathering, with residents regularly coming together to share photos, books, newspaper clippings, and other meaningful items. These visual additions help bring their stories to life, keeping everyone engaged as they react and connect with each piece shared.
“We’ve seen so many great stories come to life,” said Julie Westcott, Executive Director of Evergreen Place. “Pete’s memories from the ski club were beautiful, and it’s fun to see everyone’s reaction to each other’s keepsakes. It’s all about finding those connections.”
