On any given Saturday, the seniors who live at Gig Harbor Court may be engaged in relaxing seated yoga – or perhaps getting their nails painted. Leading the charge on these new weekly activities is none other than 9-year-old volunteer Hope B., who has a heart for older adults.

The compassionate young girl lives with her grandparents. Her grandmother’s sister – Hope’s Aunt Cindy – lives at the senior living community. Hope found it a perfect fit to create and volunteer in a new intergenerational program offered to Gig Harbor’s 60-plus residents. Each Saturday morning, Hope visits the community to paint nails and instruct the seated yoga sessions. Both activities she enjoys, and wanted to share it with others in a way that was adapted for them.
Hope, who was interviewed for the Being Neighborly column of Gig Harbor Now, said “Just because they don’t do very many things doesn’t mean they aren’t fun to hang out with!”
As for her motivation to volunteer, Hope’s answer was simple: “To see people smile and to help other people.”
With support from the Gig Harbor Court team, she will learn how to engage with residents in a way that is comfortable for everyone.
“We are glad to support Hope as she connects with residents through activities that matter to her,” said LaTanya Jules, Executive Director. “Her dedication to volunteering is a great example of the positive impact young people can have.”
