Brandy: The Heart of the Connections Program at Parmer Woods

At the Parmer Woods senior living community in Austin, Texas, the memory care program, which we call the “Connections Program,” is more than just a health service—it’s a community that provides emotional support for residents with cognitive impairments such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. This program is driven by the dedication of its Memory Care Director, Brandy.

Brandy’s journey through various roles in senior living, including Resident Care Coordinator and Medication Aid, has led her to her current position as the Memory Care Director, where she remains deeply committed to caring for seniors.

The Power of Individualized Attention in Memory Care

The Connections methodology requires Memory Care Directors to provide individualized attention. This means that Brandy has come to understand each and every one of her residents’ unique needs and preferences. She then tailors activities based on this information that she gathers on her residents. For instance, when one resident becomes agitated, Brandy often brings out painting materials to help them relax because she knows that is one of their favorite things to do.

Music therapy also plays a significant role in the Connections program. Residents enjoy listening to Elvis and country music. One resident rarely speaks, but when Brandy plays “Amazing Grace,” the resident can remember the lyrics perfectly, demonstrating the powerful impact of music to stimulate memory.

The Importance of Engaging Activities

Cooking is another favorite activity among the Connections residents at Parmer Woods. Brandy involves them in tasks like cracking eggs and measuring ingredients, which brings back fond memories and gives them a sense of purpose.

Brandy loves hearing the residents’ stories and learning from their experiences. She especially enjoys talking about family with the residents. Brandy often shares stories about her own family, including her grandchild, which prompts residents to talk about their experiences as grandparents.

The Delight from Learning from Residents

Brandy has learned a lot from working with residents with dementia. She recalls leading a crocheting activity and being surprised at how quickly residents picked it up, showing that they remember more than one might think. Each day brings new lessons and experiences, enriching her understanding of the best way to provide effective memory care.

How Brandy Handles Challenges

However, the role does come with its challenges. Brandy often faces moments when residents become agitated, which is common for those living with dementia. When this happens, she may use tools like crossword puzzles and books to soothe them. One resident finds comfort in watching birds, spending hours observing them in the bird sanctuary in the Connections neighborhood.

The Need for Patience, Imagination, and a Cheerful Outlook

Patience and imagination are crucial for those considering a career in memory care, according to Brandy. She also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a cheerful outlook, as residents can sense caregivers’ emotions. On days when she may not feel 100 percent herself, she quickly shifts her mood to create a positive environment for the residents. The deep bond she shares with them is evident, as they express missing her when she is not around.

Brandy’s dedication and deeply empathetic approach to memory care make her an essential part of the Parmer Woods at North Austin senior living community. Through her work, she enhances the lives of residents and serves as an example for others in the field. Her story highlights the importance of personalized care and the positive impact it can have on those living with dementia.
