Horses, Healing, and Hall of Fame: Ridgmar Place Senior Takes Her Place in History

Ridgmar Place | Horses, Healing, and Hall of Fame
Margaret D. of Ridgmar Place is honored in the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame for her work in equine therapy.

It all started with a young girl and a deep connection to horses. Decades later, that girl – Ridgmar Place resident Margaret D., has now earned a spot in the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame. In this place, her lifelong dedication to healing others through horses is being honored.

Margaret’s fascination with horses began at a young age when she felt an almost spiritual bond with them. This led her to pursue a degree in physical education with a focus on teaching horseback riding. She spent four years educating others on horsemanship at Camp Mystic, a summer camp for girls, where she also bought her own horse.

While working as the activity director at a psychiatric residential treatment center for children suffering from severe abuse, Margaret realized that horses could play a key role in the emotional and physical healing process. In 1996, she co-founded Wings of Hope Equitherapy, combining her love for horses with her desire to help others. Margaret served as the executive director of the organization until 2010.

Under Margaret’s leadership, Wings of Hope grew into an accredited center offering therapeutic horseback riding for people with disabilities. Today, Wings of Hope is fully accredited by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International and serves clients from ages 3 to 78. In Margaret’s retirement, she continues to support the organization by serving on its board of directors.

In 2017, Margaret’s name was added to the prestigious list of those in the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame — an honor that celebrates her decades of hard work, compassion, and dedication. Her life and legacy was recently shared on local TV station CW33.

“We couldn’t be more proud of Margaret,” said Scott Thomas, Executive Director of Ridgmar Place. “Her work has made a difference in so many lives, and this recognition is a well-deserved tribute to her incredible journey.”
