Flu and COVID-19 Vaccines: Preparing for the Season

Hi, I’m Dr. Sandra Petersen, Senior VP of Health and Wellness at Pegasus Senior Living.

As the flu and COVID-19 seasons approach, it’s essential to be prepared to protect yourself and your community.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best way to stay well is by keeping up with flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. These shots help reduce the risk of severe illness and protect against both the flu and COVID-19.

In addition to vaccinations, the CDC recommends some basic steps for prevention:

  • Wear a mask: Especially in crowded areas or those with an outbreak.
  • Wash your hands: Regular hand washing or using sanitizer helps keep germs at bay.
  • Keep your distance: Physical distancing can also reduce the spread of respiratory viruses like COVID-19 and the influenza virus.
  • Stay home: If you feel sick, it’s best to stay home and avoid spreading illness to others.

It’s also wise to stock up on essentials like tissues, hand soap, and sanitizer.

Flu vs. COVID-19 Prevention: What You Need to Know for 2024

With the ongoing evolution of flu and COVID-19, staying updated on prevention is key to staying healthy this season. The most effective “flu vs. COVID” prevention strategy starts with getting the latest vaccines designed specifically for the 2024-2025 season.

Getting your flu and COVID-19 vaccines at the same time is recommended for older adults.

The FDA has recently approved updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines that target the latest circulating variants. These new vaccines are available for everyone aged six months and older, with specific dosing schedules based on your previous vaccination status.

For those who have already received earlier COVID-19 shots, the updated vaccine can be administered at least two months after the last dose.

Similarly, the flu vaccine has been revised for the 2024-2025 season to include protection against three strains of the influenza virus. The CDC recommends getting vaccinated before flu season officially starts in October to maximize protection.

Understanding COVID Symptoms in 2024

The symptoms of COVID-19 in 2024 remain similar to those seen in previous years but can vary slightly with new variants.

Common COVID-19 symptoms in 2024 include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle aches, and the notable loss of taste or smell. In some cases, symptoms may resemble the common cold or flu, so getting tested if you feel unwell is important.

Staying vigilant about new symptoms and seeking timely medical advice can help reduce the risk of severe outcomes. Vaccinations remain your best defense, helping to minimize the impact of both flu and COVID-19.

Flu vs. COVID-19: Knowing the Symptoms

Flu and COVID-19 share many symptoms, such as fever, cough, sore throat, and muscle aches. However, COVID-19 symptoms in 2024 can also include loss of taste or smell, which is less common with the flu.

Knowing the differences can help you understand flu vs. COVID-19 and guide you in taking the right steps.

Both the flu and COVID-19 can lead to serious health conditions, especially in those who are at higher risk, such as older adults and those with underlying conditions.

If you test positive for either illness, contact your health care provider for advice on treatments that can reduce the risk of severe outcomes.

Why You Need Flu and COVID-19 Vaccines

Getting vaccinated against both the flu and COVID-19 is essential for several reasons:

  • Prevent Severe Illness: Vaccinations reduce the risk of hospitalization and severe symptoms of COVID-19 and the flu.
  • Support Health Care Systems: By preventing illness, vaccines help reduce the burden on hospitals and clinics, especially during the busy flu season.
  • Convenience: Many clinics offer flu and COVID vaccines at the same time, making it easier to get protected without multiple trips.

Consult your health care provider for personalized advice and ensure your vaccinations are up-to-date for the upcoming season.

What to Expect After Getting Vaccinated

After receiving flu and COVID vaccinations, you may experience mild side effects. These can include:

  • Soreness at the injection site
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Mild fever

These reactions are normal and show that your body is building protection. The benefits of vaccination far outweigh these temporary side effects, which usually subside within a few days. The CDC assures that it’s safe to receive both flu and COVID-19 vaccines simultaneously.

Final Thoughts

As your Senior VP of Health and Wellness at Pegasus Senior Living, I encourage everyone to get vaccinated against the flu and COVID-19 this season.

I joined Pegasus Senior Living in 2020 to design the Connections memory care program. However, my role quickly evolved to protect residents and team members from emerging health threats across the United States.

Vaccines are critical in preventing severe illness and protecting those around us. Follow CDC recommendations, take simple safety measures, and stay informed. Let’s work together to make this flu and COVID-19 season a healthier one for all.

For more detailed information, visit the CDC’s official website or consult your health care provider. Stay healthy and get vaccinated!
