What is memory care?

Memory care is a specialized type of care that provides support and services to individuals struggling with memory loss. This type of care focuses on helping individuals manage the symptoms of Alzheimer’s or dementia and can provide an engaging and supportive environment.

Similar services to assisted living are available in dementia care communities. Trained staff members provide personalized assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs). This form of senior living is a lower level of medical care than a nursing home. It is a specialized service for memory loss.

These communities are designed to provide residents with a dynamic and supportive environment that helps to slow down memory loss and improve the overall quality of life.

What treatments and therapies are there for Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s is a progressive and degenerative disease that affects memory and cognitive function. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s, and treatment options are limited to managing symptoms and slowing progression.

In memory care communities, residents have access to a range of therapies and treatments tailored to their individual needs.

These therapies may include:

  • Music and art therapy
  • Pet therapy
  • Games and puzzles
  • Memory retention activities
  • Recollection therapy

These therapies aim to promote physical and social experiences. By engaging in these activities, seniors can strengthen their brain’s neural connections, slow the progression of memory loss, and maintain their overall cognitive function.

In addition to these therapies, memory care communities provide personalized care and attention to each resident. This includes assistance with ADLs, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and medication management.

Researchers and scientists are working tirelessly to develop new medications that can help to halt or delay the progression of Alzheimer’s. These medications target the underlying biological processes that cause the disease, such as the accumulation of amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain.

One such medication currently in development is Aducanumab, designed to clear away amyloid plaques from the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Other developmental medications target different biological pathways implicated in Alzheimer’s disease, such as inflammation and oxidative stress.

While these medications offer hope for the future, it’s important to note that they are still in clinical trials and have not yet been approved by the FDA. It’s unclear at this time how effective they will be in treating Alzheimer’s, and they may have side effects or limitations.

Memory Care Washington: Introducing South Hill Village

At South Hill Village, we offer residents a range of therapies and treatments as part of our signature Connections memory care program.

Our program was designed by Dr. Sandra Petersen, a renowned expert in memory care therapy who created the program based on her experiences recovering from a stroke using neuroplasticity treatments.

Neuroplasticity is the critical therapy utilized in our data-based Connections memory care program.

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change and adapt in response to experiences throughout life. The concept is the foundation of the Connections memory care program, focusing on Connecting, Moving, and Learning to slow memory loss.
