At 97 years old, our cherished resident Lee is a World War II veteran and former first-chair flutist of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. He continues to bring joy and inspiration to the residents and team members at Sun City West Assisted Living and Memory Care.
Every day, Lee demonstrates that age is no barrier to an active and fulfilling life as he participates in community exercise programs, plays Bingo, and enjoys games like Mexican Train. Most notably, Lee captivates his fellow residents with his flute performances every Tuesday at 11 a.m. before lunch!
Meet the Maestro of Sun City West
Lee’s passion for music began early. Born in 1927 to a Presbyterian clergyman and a professional pianist, he developed a love for music that took him from his school band to the prestigious Julliard School of Music. That led to an illustrious 35-year career with the San Francisco Symphony.
Despite retiring decades ago, Lee’s love for music never faded. Now, each week, residents and visitors are treated to his beautiful flute melodies.
Lee’s contributions to the community extend beyond music. As an official Ambassador of Sun City West Assisted Living, he exemplifies a spirit of service, kindness, and camaraderie. Lee’s involvement in the community’s fitness programs, social events, and his leadership role motivates other residents to stay active and engaged in their journeys.
“Lee is a true inspiration to everyone here at Sun City West,” shares Carrie Kaye, the Life Enrichment Director of Sun City West Assisted Living. “We are so fortunate to have him share his talents and energy with us each day.”
Lee Follows the Golden Rule
Lee’s story is one of enduring love and devotion, not only to his craft but also to his late wife, Barbara Jean, to whom he was married for over 60 years. Together, they raised three children, one of whom lives nearby in Arizona, making frequent visits to see her father. Lee remains deeply proud of his family, especially his grandson, whom he often shares stories about.
This World War II veteran’s musical talents and family devotion are remarkable, but his true legacy lies in how he lives each day by the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” This simple yet profound philosophy is reflected in his active participation and positive influence at Sun City West.
