The cost of senior living in New Mexico varies depending on the type of community and the services provided. According to the 2023 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, the average monthly cost for an assisted living facility in New Mexico is about $5,450, while in Santa Fe, it averages slightly higher at $5,700. However, Santa Fe figures are generally mixed in with Albuquerque prices.

Memory care typically costs more due to the specialized services offered, averaging 20 to 30 percent higher per month. These figures provide a general idea; actual costs can vary based on individual needs and the specific community.

The cost of senior care in New Mexico is typically around the same as the national average. Home health care needed for 44 visits per week adds up to about $6,101 per month in the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area. Older adults can generally find better value in assisted living costs.

Assisted living and memory care communities cover many services for you (please see the question about pricing below). If you are concerned about being able to pay for senior living on your monthly income, make sure you know all your options. You may be eligible for additional financial support such as Social Security, long-term care insurance, veterans benefits, and other options.

Most senior living communities are private-pay. Pricing at our community is more reasonable than you’d expect, with utilities, delicious meals with snacks and beverages, transportation, fun activities, housekeeping, laundry, and more included! Personal support services are billed separately and based on hourly prices. There are two types of pricing in senior living: hospitality and healthcare.

Hospitality Services

The hospitality services are typically provided as a standard package included in what is often referred to as the “Base Rate.” Assisted living residents receive three meals per day, daily social activities, 24-hour security, utilities, access to all common areas and grounds, and transportation services (as further defined in the residency agreement).

Generally, Base Rate prices range from $90 to over $150 per day. If you consider the cost of a hotel room, you’ll realize how reasonable this is. Most hotel rooms charge over $100 per night, and many are double that. In assisted living, residents live in an apartment, not a hotel room, and receive all of their meals, activities, security, transportation, and utilities for substantially less than the cost of a hotel room.

Healthcare Services

Most people move into assisted living or memory care communities due to healthcare needs, and these needs can vary greatly. Some may just need help managing their medications, while others may need help with many daily activities, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and eating.

To make our pricing as fair as possible, The Legacy at Santa Fe develops individual care plans for each resident. We do not “nickel and dime” our families; instead, we offer care plans that translate into personalized support levels. Our community typically has up to six of these levels, and each one is based on “care time” per the plan. These plans generally translate from $10 to $15 per day for direct care or $300 to $450 per month per support level.

Your loved one will be assessed upon entry and again after 180 days, as needs often change. We will also call to inform you if we believe your loved one’s care needs have changed due to a change in condition or functionality; this will also trigger a reassessment and a meeting to discuss updates.

The terms assisted living facilities, independent living communities, and nursing homes refer to different types of senior living options, each designed to cater to varying needs and lifestyles:

Assisted living communities, like The Legacy at Santa Fe, provide personalized support with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and medication management. Residents maintain a high degree of independence while receiving the assistance they need to live comfortably and safely. Our assisted living community offers a blend of personal support and engaging activities to promote a fulfilling lifestyle.

Independent living communities are ideal for seniors who are largely self-sufficient and do not require daily assistance. They focus on providing a socially active environment with amenities such as dining services, housekeeping, and recreational activities. They are perfect for older adults who want to downsize and enjoy a community lifestyle without the burdens of home maintenance.

Nursing homes, also known as skilled nursing facilities, provide comprehensive medical care and assistance for individuals with significant health issues or chronic conditions that require round-the-clock supervision. Nursing homes are staffed with medical professionals who can provide extensive medical care and rehabilitation services.

At The Legacy at Santa Fe, we offer both assisted living and memory care, ensuring that our residents receive the appropriate support tailored to their needs while enjoying a vibrant community life. Whether you're comparing options or planning for the future, understanding these differences can help you make an informed decision about the best living arrangement for you or your loved one.

While the specific ratio may vary depending on the time of day and the needs of our residents, we strive to maintain a staff-to-resident ratio that ensures personalized and attentive care for every individual round-the-clock.
