What’s the secret to living 101 years? According to Wilma “Willie” B., it’s faith, living a healthy lifestyle, and a little bit of dancing. She celebrated the milestone birthday at The Legacy at Town Square, where the community honored a century-plus of wisdom, creativity, and unforgettable Christmas cards.
Born in Amarillo, Texas in 1924, Willie has seen and done it all. She earned a Master’s Degree from West Texas A&M University. She spent her career as a teacher and high school counselor, helping guide students through some of the most important years of their lives. In 1945, she married her husband Tommy, and together they built a family that includes one child, two granddaughters, and great-grandsons who carry on their legacy.
Beyond the classroom, Willie found joy in painting and dancing. In 1994, she started a tradition of painting her own Christmas cards, each one a personal expression of creativity. One of her favorites is a painting of her great-grandson, J.T., a piece that holds deep meaning for her.
When asked about the secret to a long life, Willie doesn’t hesitate, “God gave us one body, so take care of it!” She believes faith, exercise, and eating right have been key to her happy, 101-year life. While she hasn’t kept up with every new invention, she’s witnessed an ever-changing world, from the days before television to a time when technology connects people in ways she never imagined.
Since moving to The Legacy at Town Square in October 2023, Willie has become part of a close-knit community that values her wisdom and experience.
“Willie’s life is all about the power of faith, education, and family,” Diane Maiwald, Executive Director shared. “Her story reminds us of the impact one person can have over a lifetime. We are grateful to celebrate this milestone with her.”
