Once a month at The Renaissance of Florence, the seniors turn into pool sharks – competitively vying for the top prize during the routine billiards tournament. Resident Chuck was the latest winner, who earned a handcrafted cross made by the senior living community’s maintenance director.
The rekindled love of pool started with a few men, after The Renaissance of Florence received a donated billiards table. It started off as a few casual games between several dedicated players – until the team organized a monthly competition to create more interest and engagement throughout the entire community. Needless to say, it worked!
“Our pool tournaments have turned into a time for the guys to unwind and just be themselves,” said April Bowden, Life Enrichment Assistant. “They pick the music, choose the snacks, and I get to watch them turn the game room into their own hangout.”
The tournament is scheduled every four or five weeks, with prizes ranging from handmade crafts to small cash winnings and candy bars. Prize funds come from the community’s spring garden sales, turning green thumbs into game night rewards.
While the prizes are a bonus, it’s the camaraderie that keeps players coming back. The tournament gives residents a chance to break from routine, share some friendly banter, and celebrate the simple fun of a game well played.
