When you think of a senior living community, you likely aren’t imagining older adults actively working out every day. But at The Renaissance of Florence, that’s what you’ll see. For over 25 years, a fitness program has churned out incredible stories of older adults achieving impressive records as they focus on their health and wellness.
Led by long-time exercise partner Linda Clanton — certified with the International Dance & Exercise Association and the Alabama License Fitness Association — the program offers a variety of fitness activities tailored for seniors.
Residents participate in diverse exercise classes such as Chair Aerobics, Cardio Chair, Kickball, Chair Yoga, and the inspiring walking program, “Walking the Natchez Trace.” This unique initiative challenges residents to complete a symbolic 444-mile journey from Natchez, Mississippi, to Nashville, Tennessee, by tracking their miles walked around the community’s garden path. Four laps around the building equal one mile, and residents diligently record their progress, fostering motivation and camaraderie.
The program has seen incredible success stories, including the late Hendrik A., who completed an astonishing 5,431 miles over seven years, reaching his final milestone at the age of 99. Resident Sheila H. has walked an impressive 2,072 miles, while Virginia W. has reached 1,638 miles. Jimmie B., with her 3-wheel bike, has completed 582 miles. Additionally, Sheila leads in class attendance, having 148 sessions.
At the beginning of each year, the community gathers for a celebratory BBQ luncheon and an awards ceremony to honor these remarkable achievements. Walkers receive medallions inscribed with their names, while the resident with the highest class attendance is awarded a cash prize in recognition of their dedication. Newcomers are encouraged to join the challenge, continuing the tradition of health and perseverance that has defined the program since 1999.
“We do it because we can, and we can because we do it!” has been the motto at The Renaissance of Florence for the past two decades.
“Our residents continue to prove that age is just a number when it comes to staying active,” said Life Enrichment Director, Mary Donna Ott. “Seeing them set goals, push their limits, and celebrate their achievements is truly inspiring.”
“This program isn’t just about exercise,” she added. “It’s about community, perseverance, and proving to ourselves that we are capable of more than we ever imagined.”
