Bernie, a favorite visitor for the residents at The Renaissance of Florence, is on the brink of earning his Canine Good Citizenship certification. Since joining the community in 2023, the young pup has been a steady presence, offering comfort and support to residents through his interactions.
After months of training, he is now another step closer to becoming a working dog. Bernie, who just turned 2 years old, is now allowed to begin working towards his therapy dog certifications. He was donated by a breeder to the senior living community when he was 3 months old. When he’s not at The Renaissance of Florence, he lives with Community Sales Director Amanda Simpson.
Bernie’s calming demeanor has had a lasting impact on the lives of many residents. His visits have provided moments of peace, and his friendly nature has helped establish meaningful connections. For those who benefit from the companionship of the beloved puppy, Bernie’s role has been particularly valuable. In addition to his work at The Renaissance, Bernie also visits nearby rehabilitation and nursing home facilities, further extending his reach in the community.
His loveable personality wins over everybody he meets, including news station WHNT, which shared his impressive career path.

Bernie is currently being trained through Sharp K9 Academy, based in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. Once certified, he will continue to assist residents by providing emotional and mental support through structured therapy sessions and personal visits, contributing to the community’s ongoing efforts to improve well-being.
