6 Mind-Sharpening Hobbies to Try for Seniors

Pegasus Senior Living | Eunice at Pegasus Landing of Tanglewood

During this time with COVID-19 safety restrictions in place, we are all spending large amounts of time inside. If you have not already, you are probably exploring new hobby options. As you search for a hobby to entertain you and fill your spare time, why not consider a hobby that will sharpen your mind in the process?

According to the CDC, one in eight adults over the age of 60 reported some form of memory loss or confusion. These are some of our resident’s favorite hobbies to participate in that will improve your brain’s cognitive function while also helping you remain active.

  • Gardening
Gardening is known to be an excellent way to relieve stress. In addition to the mental health benefits, gardening has been shown to provide mental clarity.
  • Jigsaw Puzzles
It may not come as a surprise that jigsaw puzzles are a great way to increase your brain’s cognitive functions. While working on a puzzle, you exercise both sides of your brain. Solving jigsaw puzzles also improves problem-solving skills, and visual and spatial reasoning.
  • Reading
Studies show that reading helps you stay mentally stimulated, which can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. Reading has also been shown to slow the rate of memory deterioration. In fact, a study found that those who partake in activities such as reading had significantly lower rates of mental decline associated with old age.
  • Art
Creating art, such as painting, creates new connections between different brain cells. Engaging in art activities can prevent common issues with cognitive functioning and memory that come with age.
  • Video Games
Believe it or not, video games have a myriad of benefits for our brains. Playing video games helps with our sustained and selective attention. It can even help with memory, spatial reasoning skills, strategy, and social skills.
  • Board Games
Games that involve strategies such as chess, dominoes, and checkers are a great way to exercise your mind. A study conducted by The New England Journal of Medicine found that regular participation in board games resulted in a reduced risk of dementia.
