Who Lives in Independent Living? Kansas City Area Seniors Share their Story

A move into independent living is something many seniors wish they had done sooner. Senior living communities can help older adults enjoy their retirement years and avoid the valleys of a life free from work.

Independent living is one of the living options retirees can choose from to free themselves from days spent mowing the lawn, feeling lonely, or paying for costly home maintenance. These communities help connect new friends with scheduled exercises, outings, and activities.

To learn more about independent living, meet the residents who call Town Village of Leawood home. Let’s discover more about the people and services of independent living in the Kansas City area.

The Champ is Here

Staying active in retirement is essential to a long and independent life. Seniors who can remain active for at least 150 minutes per week experience the benefit of:

  • Reducing the risk of senior falls
  • Increasing mobility
  • Decreasing the risk of heart disease
  • Decrease the risk of dementia
  • Decrease anxiety and depression

Boxing is one of the ways residents stay active, and it helps to have a participant who is one of the best to do it.

In 1942, Mike joined the U.S. Airforce and took the opportunity to sharpen his boxing skills. While rising through the military ranks, he won 94 of his 100 matches. He became a Golden Gloves champion in 1955.

Our friend Mike became post commander of the Jewish War Veterans Post 605 and started a program called Holiday Gifts for Vets in 2003. His giving spirit and love for the Kansas City Royals make Mike one of the most popular people at Town Village of Leawood.

While presiding over the congregation, he had the opportunity to meet and work with Billy Graham. In 1957 he spent 16 weeks supporting prayer counselors in the organization. In that time, the church met with 2.4 million people.

David went on to train prayer counselors on how to evangelize over the telephone and formed a close bond with Graham. The organization’s leader even held David’s infant son up at an event at Madison Square Garden.

“It’s one of the highlights of my wife and I’s lives,” says David.

Social interaction is a significant part of the independent living experience. Activity directors create detailed daily calendars of wellness programs, art projects, games, and special events for residents to pick and choose to do.

Residents in independent living enjoy a variety of floor plans that include full kitchens and in-unit laundry. These spacious senior apartments are complete with contemporary designs for active older adults. New residents can decorate their living spaces with the comforts of home, including their small pets.

What is the best age to move into independent living?

There is so much fun waiting for seniors in independent living, and many people wish they had moved in sooner. Most communities’ age-restriction levels vary between 55 and 65. Moving sooner is better than later to get the most out of senior living.

A reported one-in-four seniors live in social isolation. Isolation and loneliness often lead to inactive lifestyles as dangerous as smoking cigarettes.

Sixty-three percent of assisted living residents living in Kansas are over 85. Assisted living means these seniors need help in one or two areas to continue living independently. Another 44 percent live with Alzheimer’s or dementia and will eventually need to seek memory care services.
