Tucson resident Katherine “Kay” K. recently turned 102—and what a century it’s been for her!
Born in Grandview, Missouri, on November 3, 1922, this pioneering geologist-turned-financial whiz broke ground as Missouri’s first woman geologist, and she’s been shattering expectations ever since.
With a degree in micropaleontology from the University of Kansas, Kay’s expertise in analyzing ancient fossils helped her uncover oil and water resources, making her a powerful presence in a male-dominated field. But she didn’t stop there; after a career studying rocks, Kay turned her curiosity to stocks, transforming her love of research into a second career in finance.
Kay joined the senior living community Tucson Place at Ventana Canyon in October 2022 and, at 102, remains sharp, funny, and passionate about learning. She attributes her long life to good food—and, naturally, a daily beer.
She’s the proud mother of daughter Susan and late son Jeff and is adored by her two grandchildren, Kathleen and Patrick Clare. Her husband, Bill, was a WWII pilot, and her love, though their time together, was brief.
“We are so lucky to celebrate Kay’s incredible legacy and life here at Tucson Place,” said Lisa Fuller, Sales Director of Tucson Place at Ventana Canyon. “From geology to stocks, Kay’s tenacity and passion are contagious. She’s proof that a curious mind is key to a long, happy life!”
